Five Eagles Help Broadcast PGA Tour Event over the Summer

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five North Carolina Central University men's and women's golfers had the opportunity to gain live broadcast production experience for CBS Sports at the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship from Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 4-7.

Kendall Wallace, Trey Morse and Alex Burnett from the NCCU men's golf team and Jalea Culliver and Renaissance Baker from the women's squad joined CBS Sports for four days. They walked the fairways of Sedgefield Country Club each afternoon with their assigned professional golfers at the Wyndham Championship, the last regularly scheduled PGA Tour stop before the playoffs.

As spotters on the production team, the NCCU golfers wore headsets and provided CBS Sports with valuable information about the golfer they were following for that day's broadcast, including the order of play, scoring, club choice and more.

"I thought it was really cool to see behind the scenes of a PGA event," said Culliver, who is transferring to NCCU as a junior from the University of South Dakota. "I've never been to a PGA Tour event and seeing all of the TrackMan's being used and watching how the players and caddies interacted was really interesting. I am just grateful for the opportunity."

Highlights included NCCU golfers connecting with PGA Tour golfers of color. Baker was able to follow three-time PGA Tour winner, Cameron Champ.

"The NCCU Department of Athletics is grateful to CBS Sports for building this partnership with our student-athletes," said third-year interim head coach Kendra Greene. "For a sophomore or a junior in college to be able to help produce a world class, live professional golf broadcast is tremendous and will serve them later if they choose to pursue a career in sports or media. I would like to thank CBS Sports for providing these opportunities to our golf program. We look forward to growing our relationship with CBS Sports."

Wallace was the first NCCU golfer to work with CBS Sports as spotter after Greene learned of the opportunity at a networking event provided to underserved golfers at the 2021 PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass. A few days after playing in that event, Wallace was inside the ropes for the first time working the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hallow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, just 90 minutes north of his hometown area of Columbia, South Carolina.

Wallace, a mass communications major at NCCU, has since worked at numerous PGA Tour and PGA of America broadcasts for CBS Sports, including the last two PGA Championships at Kiawah Island and Southern Hills, Jack Nicklaus' the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club and the Palmetto Championship at Congaree.

"Most times I have worked these tournaments I have been by myself or just with my dad, so being out there connecting with my teammates, talking about the round and the players we all love was nice," said Wallace, who plans to work at future CBS Sports broadcasts as he finishes up his last two years of collegiate golf eligibility at NCCU with aspirations to pursue a career in professional golf or sports media with CBS Sports.
