NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University men's basketball sophomore
Justin Wright (Greenville, N.C.) played stout defense against UTEP and Sam Houston during the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational, and was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
Wright pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds to average 6.5 per game, and scored 9.5 points per outing during the two-game event in El Paso. Wright came close to his first career double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds against UTEP, and then went for seven points and four boards against SHSU.
Wright is currently averaging 8.9 points and 3.9 boards per game, and is second on the team with 22 steals. He is the third Eagle to win a weekly award from the MEAC this season, and the third to be named Defensive Player of the Week.
NCCU will next host Mid-Atlantic Christian on Wednesday, Jan. 5.
