Eagles Slip in Heartbreaker against Radford

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University and Radford entered the ninth inning tied at 2-2, but a late RBI single for the Highlanders gave them a 3-2 win over the Eagles on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Durham Athletic Park.

NCCU (0-2) scored first in the contest as Andre White (Oakland, Calif.) ripped a two-RBI triple to left centerfield for his first career hit, and that put the Eagles ahead of Radford (2-0), 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

The Highlanders pulled a run back after an RBI single from Garrett Matheny (Perry Hall, Md.) in top of the third inning, and then pulled level a double from Will Harless (Abingdon, Va.) in the top of the sixth.  Timely defensive plays and strong pitching from both sides kept the score level heading to the ninth inning, but a two-out single by Colby Higgerson (Chesapeake, Va.) finally broke the deadlock to send the Highlanders ahead 3-2.

NCCU immediately put the tying run on in the bottom of the ninth after a leadoff single by Kobe Phillips (Charlotte, N.C.), and the Eagles moved him into scoring position on a well-placed sacrifice bunt.  However, the rally was stopped short, and Radford came away with the win.

White collected a game-high three hits for NCCU along with those two RBI, and both Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) and Myles Coston (Pittsburg, Calif.) had two hits.  Shane Davis (Currituck, N.C.) made his first start for the Eagles, and he pitched five complete innings with just one hit allowed, and fanned six batters.

NCCU and Radford will play the final game of the series on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park, and admission is free.
