Eagles Outlasted in Extras by Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina Central University rallied to tie the game on two separate occasions, including a two-run single in the top of the ninth to force extra innings, but Florida A&M came away with a 7-6 win on a walk off in the bottom of the 11th on Sunday, May 5 at Moore Kittles Field.

FAMU (21-28, 13-8 MEAC) took the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs before NCCU (19-27, 10-13 MEAC) got onto the board in the top of the fifth on a run producing at bat from Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.).

The Rattlers scored one in the bottom of the fifth to expand their lead to three once more, before the Eagles put together a three-run rally to knot the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.  Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) started the inning with a single, and Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) exited the yard on a two-run blast for his team-lead tying fifth home run of the year to level the game.

FAMU pushed back in front in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run double from Robert Robinson (Pompano Beach, Fla.) to send the hosts ahead 6-4, and the Eagles responded in the top of the ninth on a clutch two-RBI single from Myles Coston (Pittsburg, Calif.) to send the game to extra innings, tied 6-6.

The additional frames remained at a standoff until the bottom of the 11th when Willis McDaniel (Tallahassee, Fla.) ended the game with a walk off single.

Of note, Williams tallied three hits in the contest to become the new NCCU modern era career leader in hits with 193 over three years and 145 games played.  Nick Fajardo (Durham, N.C.) also picked up a pair of hits with a walk for the Eagles.

NCCU will next play on Wednesday, May 8 on the road at Longwood before coming home on May 10 and 11 to host Norfolk State for Senior Weekend at the Durham Athletic Park.
