Eagles Drop Nail Biter with Savannah State

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but a diving catch brought the game to a conclusion as Savannah State grabbed a 9-7 win on Friday, April 26 at the Durham Athletic Park.

SSU (8-21-1, 6-10 MEAC) scored the first three runs of the game by posting two runs in the top of the first and adding the third on a solo home run from Joey Roberson (Wayne, Ill.) in the top of the third.  Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) put NCCU (18-23, 9-9 MEAC) on the board on an RBI single in the bottom of the third and he continues to lead the Eagles with 31 runs driven in.

The Eagles pulled within a run in the bottom of the sixth after a sacrifice fly from Myles Coston (Pittsburg, Calif.) sent the score to 3-2 in favor of the guests.  SSU pulled those two runs right back in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from Jalen Atterbury (Decatur, Ga.) and a wild pitch to move ahead, 5-2 at the stretch.

NCCU remained unfazed and leveled the game after sending all nine batters to the plate too score on a pair of bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly from Coston to push the score to 5-5.  The Tigers responded with a big inning of their own as they sent all nine of their batters to the plate to score four in the top of the eighth to give the visitors a 9-5 cushion.

Once again, the Eagles held firm and volleyed back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI triple from Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) that tied him for the league lead with his fourth three-base hit of the campaign.  Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) drove him in on a sacrifice fly to send NCCU to the final inning down 9-7.

Facing their final out, the Eagles put two men on by way of a single and an error to bring the winning run to the plate, but a high-effort play in left field gave SSU the series-opening win.

Williams notched his 13th double of the year for the Eagles, and both Joyce and Josh Brammell (Harrison City, Pa.) touched home three times for NCCU.  Brammell, Maslin, and Joyce also each recorded two hits.

Luis Lamarche (Miami, Fla.) led the Tigers by going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Game two of the weekend series is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.  Admission is free.
