Eagles Tripped by Savannah State in Wild Game

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University saw Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) go 5-for-5 at the plate with six RBI, but Savannah State scored 16 runs in the final five innings of the game to push past the Eagles for a 17-12 win on Saturday, April 27 at the Durham Athletic Park.

NCCU (18-24, 9-10 MEAC) took the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Williams, and SSU (9-21-1, 7-10 MEAC) responded in kind with a solo home run from Turner Davis (Rincon, Ga.) to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second.

Nick Fajardo (Durham, N.C.) put the Eagles back ahead with an RBI double in the bottom of the second, and the hosts would go on to score the next six runs unanswered to take an 8-1 lead after four.  During that stretch, Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) supplied a two-RBI double, and Williams lifted a three-run blast out to right field to book his fourth round-tripper of the year.

After seeing the Eagles get hot at the plate, the Tigers got their bats going as well with four runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of two-RBI singles from Jalen Atterbury (Decatur, Ga.) and Luis Lamarche (Miami, Fla.) to cut the game to 8-5.  The Tigers scored two more in the top of the sixth to draw within one, but the Eagles regained their cushion with another two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Williams and a sacrifice fly from Maslin to give NCCU a 10-7 advantage.

The Tigers finally found their way into the lead in the top of the seventh with another four-run frame, as Davis knocked a two-run double before Atterbury put the visitors in front, 11-10, on an RBI single.  SSU echoed itself with another four runs in the top of the eighth to establish its largest lead of the game at 15-10.

Williams again pulled a run back for the Eagles on an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but the Tigers struck back with two runs in the ninth after miscues by the NCCU defense.  The Eagles put three runners on in the bottom of the ninth and Timmy Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.) chipped in with a sacrifice fly, but the rally attempt would be stopped short.

Maslin drove in three RBI for the Eagles, and Josh Brammell (Harrison City, Pa.) picked up three hits and scored twice.

Game three of the weekend series will be on Sunday, April 28 at the Durham Athletic Park at noon.  Admission is free.
