DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University and Duke turned on the power at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park as there were a handful of extra base hits, but the nationally-ranked Blue Devils scored late to notch a 6-2 win over the Eagles on Tuesday, April 23.
Duke (25-16) started the power show early as Kyle Gallagher (Endwell, N.Y.) hit a two-run homer to left to put the Blue Devils ahead 2-0. Duke added on another in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice to grab a 3-0 lead after the first couple frames before another solo home run in the bottom of the fourth from Ethan Murray (Crozet, Va.) gave the hosts a 4-0 cushion.
NCCU (18-21) found itself without a hit through the first four and two-thirds of an inning, but
Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) finally put the Eagles into the hit column with a single into right field in the top of the fifth inning. That was all it took to wake up the bats as
Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) jumped on the very next pitch and turned it over the left field wall for a two-run mash, his fifth of the season.
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) kept the line moving with his 12th double of the year, but the Eagles' flurry would end shortly after. Joyce doubled in a later at bat and finished the contest 2-for-5.
The final home run of the contest belonged to Michael Rothenberg (Boca Raton, Fla.) as he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 6-2 win for Duke.
The Eagles used five separate arms over the ballgame, including a season-best outing from
Caleb McRoy (Raleigh, N.C.) as he recorded five strikeouts over three innings of relief. Also of note, Maslin joined Joyce with a two-hit contest.
The Eagles will return to the field on Wednesday, April 24 on the road at Norfolk State before coming home to the Durham Athletic Park on Friday, April 26 against Savannah State for the final home MEAC Southern Division series of the season.
