Eagles Stopped by Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – North Carolina Central University struck first, but Savannah State once again was able to score late to grab a 4-1 win and the series on Saturday, March 23 at Tiger Field.

NCCU (9-14, 3-5 MEAC) put the first run on the board on an RBI single from Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) for his team-leading 20th RBI of the year.  SSU (4-12-1, 2-3 MEAC) knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a solo homer from Joey Robertson (Wayne, Ill.), and then took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single in the third frame.

The game remained tight all the way until the seventh inning where the Tigers pushed two runs across to take a 4-1 advantage.  The Eagles again were able to pull the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Robertson was able to take the mound and finish things for SSU in his first save of the year.

Maslin led the Eagles at the plate as he went 3-for-4, and Robertson had a strong day for SSU in the box as he went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

SSU once again rode strong pitching through the afternoon as Caleb Hill (Savannah, Ga.) tossed eight innings to grab the win.

Game three of the weekend series will be on Sunday, March 24 at 1:00 p.m.
