DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University and Presbyterian were only separated by a few hits, but the Blue Hose took advantage with runners on to take a 9-3 win over the Eagles on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Durham Athletic Park.

The game got off to a quick start as Nick Guimbarda (Suwanee, Ga.) hit a leadoff home run to immediately push PC (2-5) ahead, and the Blue Hose added another run on an error to take a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.  NCCU (4-4) responded just as fast as
Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) deposited a pitch in nearly the same location as Guimbarda on a solo home run to bring the Eagles back within one.

Guimbarda picked up another RBI in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to once again give PC a two-run lead, and that was all of a cushion that Eric Miles (Lancaster, S.C.) needed on the mound for the visitors.  Miles turned in six innings of work with eight strikeouts and five hits for the Blue Hose on the way to the win.

PC took a 9-1 lead to the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Eagles didn't leave easily as they picked up a run in the seventh, and then another on an RBI single from
Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) who picked up his team-leading eighth RBI of the season.  The Eagles proceeded to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning as they started to mount a rally, but the Blue Hose were able to stop the surge to pick up the victory.

Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.), Joyce and Maslin each had two hit performances for the Eagles, and
Caleb Coyle (Wake Forest, N.C.) knocked a double.  Of note,
Tyler Penner (Matthews, N.C.) made his first appearance in relief since April 25, 2017 after missing the 2018 campaign due to injury, and picked up two strikeouts over 2.2 innings without allowing a run to finish the game.

Guimbarda was responsible for three RBI for the Blue Hose from the leadoff spot, and Jimmy Marcelli (Lake Wylie, S.C.) picked up three hits right behind him in the second spot in the lineup.

NCCU will start a three-day, three-game series with Lafayette on Friday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.  Admission is free.
