Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University turned the tables on Savannah State as the Eagles scored nine unanswered runs on its way to an 11-2 win to take the series on Sunday, April 30 at the Durham Athletic Park.
NCCU (20-26, 10-10 MEAC) got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first with two runs scoring on an RBI single from
Jake Raby (Granite Falls, N.C.) and an error, and then added another on a solo blast from
Dominic Cuevas (Gurnee, Ill.) to left field.
The Eagles broke the game open in the top of the fourth when NCCU batted around and scored four runs, including a two-run shot from
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.). Williams added another RBI in the next inning with a single to put the Eagles out in front, 9-0. Williams finished with a pair of hits with three RBI, and Raby had three hits for the maroon and gray. Cuevas also scored a game-high three runs in the contest.
SSU (12-31, 3-15 MEAC) got on the board in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs, but the Eagles snatched those runs back in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double from
Tony Mejias (Miami, Fla.).
Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) turned in a strong start for the Eagles by pitching 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts without allowing a run, and just three hits allowed in the win.
NCCU has the midweek off this week before heading to Florida A&M for its final divisional series of the year on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7.
