2016 ECU Invitational Results

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Frida Cnossen claimed her first collegiate singles win for the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team in the East Carolina University Invitational at the River Birch Tennis Complex on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 23-24.

Cnossen was competing in the second flight of the two-day event and picked up her triumph in a three-set battle against ECU's senior Maria Storozheva. Cnossen, who lost her other two matches, rallied to pick up NCCU's lone win by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.

Junior Jamie Rogers and senior Lynsey Cover also fought three-set battles for the Lady Eagles in the first and third flights, respectively, but were both knocked off in the supersets.

Rogers went the distance twice. The Cary, North Carolina, product was edged by Appalachian State sophomore Rebecca Morse (7-6 [4], 2-6, 10-3) and ECU senior Michelle Castro (4-6, 6-4, 10-8). Rogers was leading Castro, who has been one of the Pirates most consistent players of the past couple of years, 8-4 in the tiebreaker before the ECU veteran rattled off the next six points to win.

Cover had her closest match against Campbell University freshman Alexandra Nicoara, in which she lost a tight 6-2, 6-7 [3], 10-3 affair.

Senior Tamara Jeremic, junior Lauren Mullis and freshman Iris Floet also saw action for the Lady Eagles in singles and/or doubles action over the weekend.

The ECU Invitational was a round-robin style competition with seven singles flights and four doubles flights. Each flight consisted of one player from each of the four competing universities (NCCU, ECU, App State and Campbell) playing a trio of matches against the other three competitors at their level.

The Lady Eagles will wrap up their fall slate by hosting the second annual NCCU Invitational on Thursday-Friday, Oct. 20-21.
