NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central women's tennis earned its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory with a 7-0 win over Coppin State on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles secured their second sweep of the season.
NCCU (5-8, 1-1 MEAC) bounced back at the MEAC Round-Up by claiming the doubles point. Patricia Palencia and Sara Barbaric earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while the Eagles also secured the No. 3 doubles point by default due to Coppin State's limited roster.
The Eagles dominated the remainder of the match, winning all singles contests in straight sets. After a default victory at No. 6 singles, Valeria San Miguel Soria put NCCU up 3-0 with a commanding win at No. 2, not dropping a single game.
Mariana Zottoli followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the match. Barbaric added another point with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Freshman Journee Henderson earned her first MEAC victory with a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 5 singles. Alejandra Hidalgo Vega closed out the sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 1 position.
Coppin State (0-8, 0-2 MEAC) remains in search of its first win this season.
NCCU concludes play at the MEAC Round-Up on Monday, March 30, with a doubleheader at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Eagles will face Morgan State at 8 a.m. and Delaware State at 5 p.m. before returning home.
