Eagles Secure Pair of Wins Over Morgan State and Delaware State

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central women's tennis wrapped up the MEAC Round-up with two victories on Monday as the Eagles defeated Morgan State 4-3, and swept Delaware State 7-0.

NCCU (7-8, 3-1 MEAC) opened the match by securing the doubles point, with both victories coming in tiebreaks. Mariana Zottoli and Valeria San Miguel Soria prevailed at No. 2 doubles, while Alejandra Hidalgo Vega and Valentina de Aquino claimed the No. 3 spot.

After Morgan State evened the score with a win at No. 2 singles, Zottoli restored the Eagles' lead, earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles. Journee Henderson added another point at the No. 6 position with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

The Bears narrowed the deficit with a victory at No. 3 singles, making it 3-2. Hidalgo Vega responded for NCCU, clinching the match at No. 1 singles against Michaela Stephens. After dropping the first set, the senior rallied to win the next two, 6-1, 6-3.

Morgan State (10-7, 2-1 MEAC) entered the contest on a six-match winning streak before facing the Eagles.

The Eagles kept their momentum going in the evening match against Delaware State. Similar to the first contest, NCCU secured the opening point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

At No. 5 singles, Henderson set the tone with a straight-sets victory, while Zottoli followed with another win at No. 3 singles. The remaining matches were tightly contested, all going to three sets and featuring multiple tiebreaks.

At No. 1 singles, Hidalgo Vega claimed the second and third sets to earn a key point for the Eagles. San Miguel Soria battled through a first-set tiebreak and later secured a 10-point tiebreaker to win at No. 2. Barbaric added another point in the No. 4 slot, taking the first and third sets, while Valentina de Aquino capped off the match in the No. 6 position by winning back-to-back tiebreakers to secure the Eagles' seventh point.

Delaware State (2-9, 1-2 MEAC) will face Howard, Morgan State, and Coppin State in the latter half of conference play.

Next, the Eagles will host South Carolina State on Monday, April 6 at 10 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park in one of their final two regular-season conference matches.
