NCCU Baseball Chases Records in Win over Virginia State

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University combined to hit four home runs as the Eagles bolted past Virginia State University 14-4 on Wednesday, April 6 at the Durham Athletic Park.

The four team home runs for NCCU (15-17) is the second most in the modern era after the Eagle belted five in an 18-9 win over Morehouse on Feb. 18, 2007.

Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) led the way with a banner day crushing two homers, with the first being a three-run jolt in the first frame putting the Eagles up 3-0.  VSU (3-22) held a spark in its bats as well as Stephen Brown (McBee, S.C.) ripped a solo shot to left in the second to trim the deficit to 3-1.

The Trojans went on to claim the lead in the top of the third on another home run, a two-run lift from David Markins (Colonial Heights, Va.) followed by an RBI groundout that moved the visitors in front 4-3.

Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.) knotted the game up for NCCU right in the bottom of the frame, and then Conrad Kovalcik (Detroit, Mich.) boosted the Eagles ahead on a two-run laser to right field to make the score 6-4.

Ortiz secured the win for the Eagles when he tacked on a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth for his seventh RBI of the evening, which is good for second in the modern era in a single game.  The final home run of the day came from the bat of Christian Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C.) who launched a two-run knock to left field.

Outside of the power hitters for NCCU, Thomas Prospero (Batavia, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk, a double and stolen base, and a team-high four runs scored.

The Eagles will head on the road next to UNC Asheville this weekend for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9.  Live Twitter updates can be found by following @NCCUAthletics.
