NCCU Muscles past North Carolina A&T for Weekend Sweep

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University hit a pair of big home runs and used other big hits to get the weekend series sweep over North Carolina A&T State University, 8-4 on Sunday, April 17 at the Durham Athletic Park.

NC A&T (9-30, 3-12 MEAC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the first couple innings, but NCCU (20-19, 8-7 MEAC) was able to work its way back even in the bottom of the third.

Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) put the Eagles on the board with a solo shot to right field, and Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) leveled the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to drive in Trevor Theissen (Franklin, Wisc.).

In the bottom of the fourth NCCU picked up consecutive two-out walks, and a dropped pop up in the infield allowed Christian Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C.) to hustle all the way in from second base to move the Eagles in front, 3-2.

A leadoff solo home run from Kyle Clary (Lakewood, Calif.) knotted the game once again in the top of the fifth, but NCCU took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth.

Theissen stepped up and delivered an RBI triple – his first three-bagger at NCCU – and he was brought in on a single from James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) to give the Eagles a 5-3 advantage.

Hopkins was one of three Eagles to have a three-hit day, as he cashed in for an RBI single in the top of the seventh, and he reached base in each of his five plate appearances on the afternoon.  Dey was the second after he tacked on an insurance run on a solo blast in the eighth inning, and Prospero finished the scoring for the Eagles with his third hit, an RBI single to drive in Ortiz.

The Aggies made the top of the ninth interesting after their first two batters got aboard on a single and an error, and Ryan Jantsch (Dubuque, Iowa) drove in an RBI single to close the gap.  The next man up grounded into a game-ending double play, and the Eagles completed a weekend sweep over their rival for the second year in a row.

The Eagles will next be in action at home against Longwood University on Tuesday, April 19 at the Durham Athletic Park before heading to Daytona Beach, Florida to visit Bethune-Cookman University.  All upcoming games will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com, and live Twitter updates can be found by following @NCCUAthletics.
