ASHEVILLE, N.C. – North Carolina Central University needed just two pitchers to record a 6-2 win over UNC Asheville, and take the weekend series on Sunday, April 10 at Greenwood Baseball Stadium.
NCCU (17-18) took control of the scoreboard early as it totaled five runs over the first three innings, capped by a three-run third inning to pull ahead of Asheville (9-24) 5-0 through three complete frames.
The Eagles got their first two runs on errors in the first and second innings, but finally picked up a pair of RBI hits in the third inning from
Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.) and
James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.). Marszal knocked in one run on a single, and Dey followed with a two-RBI double down the right field line to give starter
Cameron Scalzo (Rochester, N.Y.) plenty of room to work with.
Scalzo worked a spotless first three innings as he turned the Bulldog batting order over without allowing a hit or a run. He pitched five and one-third of an inning with four walks and two strikeouts and wasn't charged with his first run until he left the game, when Scott Kobos (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
Asheville continued to work its way back into the contest as the Bulldogs picked up a run on a double play in the bottom of the eighth to trim the deficit to 5-2 going into the final inning.
Jacobi Harris (Pittsboro, N.C.) snatched that run right back for the Eagles on an RBI single, and NCCU held a four-run cushion at 6-2 with Asheville down to its final three outs.
Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) was the lone man summoned from the bullpen as he pitched three and two-thirds of an inning with just one earned run, three hits and three strikeouts, and set Asheville down quickly in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first career save.
NCCU returns to Durham for both of its midweek games, first at home against Presbyterian College on Tuesday, April 12 and then at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park against neighbor Duke University on Wednesday, April 13.
Both games will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com, and live Twitter updates can be found by following @NCCUAthletics.
