DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University out-hit Duke University eight to six, but the Blue Devils used timely hitting to win the crosstown battle over the Eagles, 3-0 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday, April 13.
Duke (19-15) picked up a pair of runs in the first two frames after Chris Proctor (Lawndale, N.C.) generated an RBI single in the second to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Proctor would go on to get a second RBI hit, and he was responsible for driving in two of the three runs scored for the Blue Devils.
Christian Gonnelli (Lebanon, Conn.) turned in a five strikeout performance for NCCU (17-19) over six complete innings and scattered five hits with two earned runs, but the Eagles just couldn't find the key to push a run across.
A pair of Eagle hitters picked up two hits as both
James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Thomas Prospero (Batavia, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 for the evening. Dey also came in from the bullpen and pitched two-thirds of an inning with both outs recorded by a swinging strikeout.
The Eagles will meet Duke again at the Durham Athletic Park on April 27 at 6:00 p.m., but first NCCU hosts a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference three-game series with rival North Carolina A&T State University starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16.
All games of that series will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com. Live Twitter updates will also be available by following @NCCUAthletics.
