NCCU Baseball Meets Appalachian State and Norfolk State for Midweek Battles


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University baseball team will play its first midweek games as the Eagles host Appalachian State on Tuesday, March 1 and visit the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season champions of Norfolk State University on Wednesday, March 2.

NCCU (3-4) is coming off a series win over Niagara University where the Eagles took three of four games at the Durham Athletic Park Feb. 26-28.  Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) earned MEAC Player of the Week honors after batting .467 through the series with nine RBI stemming from two homers, two doubles and a triple.

App State (1-7) travels to Durham after its first home games of the season in a four-game series with Quinnipiac Feb. 27-28.  The Mountaineers got their first win of the young season against those Bobcats by way of a 10-7 decision on Saturday, Feb. 27.

Colin Schmid leads App State at the plate with a .344 batting average and six RBI.  He has a couple of doubles, a triple and a homer so far this season, and is slugging .563.

NSU (3-5) last hosted NJIT Feb. 28-29 and won the series with three wins out of four.  Spartan hurler Matt Outman won Pitcher of the Week for tossing a shutout with seven strikeouts and six hits against the Highlanders, and Kevin Granger earned Rookie of the Week after batting 3-for-8 with two steals and an RBI during the series.
