BOSTON – North Carolina Central University's baseball team takes on Florida A&M in a historic conference series on April 24-25 in Boston. The series will end with the first ever HBCU regular season conference game played at Fenway Park.
The series will begin with a doubleheader played at Jim Rice Field in Roxbury, Mass. on Friday, April 24, with the first game scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and the second game at 2:00 p.m. The final game will be played at 2:00 p.m. at Fenway Park on Saturday, April 25.
If the Eagles sweep and other results go their way they can potentially finish the weekend as Southern Division champions in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the first time in the school's modern era.
The last time NCCU and FAMU met in Durham, the Eagles swept the weekend on March 21-22.
NCCU (19-28, 12-8 MEAC) currently sits a half-game behind Bethune-Cookman (15-31, 13-8 MEAC) who will play a weekend series with Savannah State (16-26, 9-9 MEAC), who is currently fourth, on April 25-26. FAMU (14-22, 10-8 MEAC) enters the weekend in third place in the division, so a lot is on the line during the upcoming games.
NCCU outfielder
Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) leads the conference in home runs with nine, and is followed by
Ronald Thompson (Chadbourn, N.C.) with seven. Ortiz is also tied for the league lead in RBI with 31 with two other players.
The Rattlers have dropped their last three games, stretching back to a series with SSU that started with FAMU taking the first two games on April 12. Jared Walker (Tallahassee, Fla.) paces the club at the plate with a batting average of .313 and a slugging percentage of .400.
All games will be aired live on the NCCU Sports Network, available at NCCUEaglePride.com and the game at Fenway will be televised on NESN. Live updates will be available on the official Twitter account of NCCU Athletics, @NCCUAthletics.
