BOX SCOREDURHAM, N.C. – Junior
Aissa Muamba notched an impressive straight-set win in the marquee singles match for North Carolina Central University in a 4-1 non-conference loss to visiting Campbell University on Monday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The Camels won by three points but they had to earn every point in a match that took over four hours to complete and NCCU looking strong in the two unfinished singles bouts.
Campbell won an important tiebreaker in doubles and rallied for a three-set win at No. 4 singles to squeak out the important team points. The Camels moved over .500 at 9-8 overall and the Lady Eagles fell to 4-12.
Sophomore
Lynsey Cover and freshman
Jamie Rogers posted an 8-6 win in the third doubles match to put NCCU ahead in doubles but Campbell rallied to win the other two matches to take the first team point. Cover and Rogers won four of the last five games for the comeback win and to level their record together at 5-5.
The Camels captured an 8-4 win in the middle doubles match and then needed a tiebreaker win to survive in the top slot 8-7 (5) against the NCCU senior partnership of
Ekaterina Nekrasova and
Rebecca Wood.
Muamba leveled the score at 1-1 for the host Eagles by hitting her spots and constantly moving her opponent all over the first court until she prevailed by a score of 7-5, 6-3. With the win, Muamba (10-6) reached the 10-win plateau for a third straight season while picking up her 40th career victory in just her junior season.
The Camels got straight set triumphs from Tamara Stanic and Iri Karangozishvili at No. 2 and No. 3 to pull ahead but Wood and Nekrasova played them closely, respectively, with one set finishing 7-5 in both encounters.
Junior
Mia Ramic jumped out to a first-set win for the Lady Eagles at No. 4 but sophomore Maud Mrad rallied to win 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 and close out the team victory for Campbell.
If North Carolina Central won doubles or just one of its singles matches from positions 2-4 the Lady Eagles would have had a chance at the win with Rogers jumping out to a 4-0 lead in her singles match and Cover playing evenly in her singles match (tied 2-2 in the first set when play was stopped).
NCCU hosts Western Carolina University on Friday with a Noon first serve.
