Game 2 DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University extended its home win streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Florida A&M on Saturday at Durham Athletic Park. The Eagles won the opener 4-1 and the nightcap 6-1.
NCCU (10-11, 5-5 MEAC) set the tone early in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior right fielder
Ronald Thompson (Chadbourn, N.C.) opened the scoring for the Eagles with an RBI single, and junior first baseman
Christian Triplett (Wilkesboro, N.C.) followed with an RBI double for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Senior starting pitcher
Jordan Quinn (Goldsboro, N.C.) notched a quality start for the Eagles, going 6.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts, scattering five hits and allowing only one unearned run to cross the plate. FAMU (7-14, 4-4 MEAC) left 12 runners on base during the nine innings.
The play of the day came in the seventh inning when Thompson tracked down a fly ball in right field and came up throwing, gunning out the tagging runner at the plate to preserve a 3-1 lead for the Eagles. NCCU went on to score another run before junior reliever
Andrew Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) came in with two outs in the ninth and closed the door for the 4-1 win. Vernon notched his third save of the year, which leads the Eagle bullpen and is now tied for the lead in the conference.
Triplett and
Conrad Kovalcik tallied two hits apiece for the Eagles.
NCCU was able to score first in game two as well, as senior third baseman
Troy Marrow (Lutherville, Md.) drove in
Eric Kimber (Greensboro, N.C.) on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
FAMU struck back in the top of the second by way of a home run to left from senior Ryan Kennedy (Merritt Island, Fla.), his second of the year.
The Eagles then broke the game open in the bottom of the second with a four-run, three-hit inning, capped by a 2-RBI single up the middle from Thompson. NCCU never looked back.
Junior right hander
Alex Dandridge (Arlington, Texas) had a fantastic day on the mound, going the distance for the seven-inning complete game, his second of the season. Dandridge allowed just three hits and three walks with three strikeouts and gave up the only run of the game on the homer from Kennedy. Dandridge improved his record to 3-0, while dropping his ERA to a respectable 1.50.
