Rebecca Wood and sophomore
Lynsey Cover posted perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins in leading the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Savannah State University to begin Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play Thursday afternoon at Timrod Park.
The Lady Eagles also got straight set wins by junior
Aissa Muamba (6-1, 6-3) and freshman
Jamie Rogers (6-2, 6-0) while
Tamara Jeremic was awarded a default win.
Muamba, who partnered with junior
Mia Ramic for the clinching doubles point, won her third consecutive singles match to improve to a team-best 7-2 playing in the upper half of the lineup all season.
The Lady Tigers won the top doubles match but forfeited the bottom entry with only five active players putting pressure on the middle draw. However, Muamba and Ramic coasted to the 8-0 win to clinch the first team point for the Lady Eagles.
Sophomore Kamelia Dimitrova prevented Savannah State from being shut out by holding off junior
Ekaterina Nekrasova on court one by a score of 6-1, 7-5. Dimitrova was also part of the Lady Tigers dramatic 8-7 (5) doubles win.
Wood, Cover and Rogers won from positions three through five, respectively. Wood (4-4) and Rogers (3-3) both leveled their singles ledgers.
NCCU improved to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the league while Savannah State slipped to 2-8 and 0-1.
The Lady Eagles will continue play in the MEAC Southern Division Round-Up in Florence with a duel against Florida A&M University on Friday at 11 a.m.
