NCCU WOMEN’S TENNIS ENDS 2013 REGULAR SEASON IN THRILLING FASHION

Lady Eagles Finish Regular Season 13-7, 5-1 (MEAC)

RADFORD, VA. – The North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team ended the record-breaking 2013 season in thrilling fashion as the Lady Eagles last match of the year came down to the wire with a 4-3 victory over Radford University on Tuesday, April 16 in Radford, Va., at the Radford University Tennis Complex.

Sophomore Rebecca Wood’s No. 4 singles match was the deciding during the non-conference match-up as she defeated Meg Napolitano 6-4, 7-5 giving NCCU the 4-2 lead and sealing the Lady Eagles 13th victory.

During doubles competition Radford snatched the first win from the Lady Eagles after Taylor Fay and Gemma Valls defeated NCCU’s Brianna Gatson and Julia Aguilar 8-1 in the No. 3 spot.

The Lady Eagles answered and earned the doubles point after the No. 2 combination of senior Olesya Palko and Aissa Muamba were victorious over Hana Babic and Allison Michael (8-4), and the sophomore duo of Wood and Ekaterina Nekrasova beat Napolitano and Taylor Newman 9-7.

In singles action Radford tied the score at 1-1 after Michael beat Aguilar in the No. 6 spot.

Lone Lady Eagle senior, Palko, switched the momentum back in NCCU’s favor after she defeated Radford’s No. 1, Newman, (6-0, 6-2), giving the Lady Eagles the 2-1 lead.

Muamba cleared the courts third after she was victorious in the No. 3 spot over Hana Babic 6-1, 6-1 before Radford seized the No. 5 victory as Mia Ramic fell to Fay 6-3, 6-4.

With the match separated by one point, NCCU captured the victory after Wood’s No. 4 victory pushed the Lady Eagles on top, 4-2.

NCCU women’s tennis finished the 2013 regular season campaign with an overall record of 13-7 while finishing 5-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Lady Eagles set a school record of 13 wins and finished undefeated at home for the first time in school history with a 6-0 record.

The Lady Eagles will return to the courts on Friday, April 19 as they play in the first round of the MEAC Tennis Championship. NCCU, who finished second in the southern division, is slated to play at 8:30 a.m. against the No. 3 seed from the northern division, Delaware State.

The 2013 MEAC Tennis Championship will take place in Raleigh, N.C., at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
