Box Score DURHAM, N.C. – During a back-and-forth match filled with 28 ties and nine lead changes the North Carolina Central University volleyball team captured its second straight victory defeating the South Carolina State University Bulldogs, 3-1 (25-21, 28-26, 19-25, 25-22) in a Sunday afternoon Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference battle inside the L.T. Walker Complex on the campus of NCCU.
Junior Da'sha Brown earned her third kill/dig double-double of the season leading the Eagles with 12 kills and 12 digs.
Senior
Kalin Russell and junior
Ashley McCarthy also added double-digit kill performances during the victory contributing 10 apiece. Russell gathered an additional seven digs, one service ace and a season-high eight blocks, with two solo rejections while McCarthy contributed five digs and three blocks.
The Eagles offense was assisted by the junior/sophomore setting duo of
Alice Genna and
Melissa Rabell Pineiro who dished 24 and 14 assists respectively.
On the defensively end, rookie
Kelsey Murphy led the way with a team-high 14 digs, while also contributing seven kills.
During set one, the Eagles dominated, never trailing the Bulldogs. While battling through nine ties, NCCU sealed the first game at 25-21, leading SCSU 1-0.
Set two was a back-and-forth battle that saw 16 ties and eight lead changes. After a kill from junior
Aljalena Thompson, the Eagles captured the 28-26 win, taking a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs into the matches 10 minute intermission.
The Bulldogs answered the Eagles lead during set three never allowing NCCU to lead and leading by as many as six. The Eagles offense struggled to answer, falling to SCSU, 25-19.
With the match score at 2-1, the Bulldogs opened set four on a 10-1 run. A kill from NCCU's McCarthy brought the game within one at 17-16; before the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to tie the set for the first time since 1-1, at 22, and continuing on to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
As a team, NCCU collected 50 kills, with 21 errors on 130 attempts, amassed 24 assists, 51 digs, three service aces, and a match-high 10 team blocks.
SCSU was led by Desire Waller who led the match with 23 kills, Melanie Williams who circulated a match-high 43 assists and Victoria Ferguson who led the match with 15 digs.
Collectively, the Bulldogs knocked in 52 kills, with 27 errors on 142 attempts, collected 48 assists, 51 digs, five service aces and seven team blocks.
With the victory the Eagles advance to 2-20 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while SCSU drops to 2-17 and 2-3 in the MEAC.
NCCU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 18 as the Eagles travel to Baltimore, Md., for a Northern/Southern division MEAC match-up against Coppin State at 7 p.m.
