Series History: NC Central plays Norfolk State for the second time this season, after winning the first conference meeting in January. The Spartans still lead the series 36-21. NCCU is ahead 47-19 in its series with Delaware State and will meet for the first time on Monday after a weather postponement. In the previous two seasons, the Eagles and Hornets' final meetings have come in the MEAC Basketball Tournament. Delaware State would advance in 2024, and NC Central returned the favor in 2025.
Scouting Norfolk State: The Spartans have lost their last two games and are currently 3-4 in MEAC action. Norfolk State last played on Jan. 31 at Howard, falling 88-60. The Green & Gold have three double-figure scorers, led by Anthony McComb III (16.7), Elijah Jamison (14.6) and Devon Ellis (10.3). Norfolk State is currently first in the conference in offense (75.8), field goal percentage (.458), and three-point field goal percentage defense (.316). The Spartans are also 21st in the nation in fastbreak points at 15.58 per game.
Scouting Delaware State: The Hornets earned their first conference victory on Jan. 31, defeating Maryland Eastern Shore 65-57, and are now 1-5 against MEAC opponents. Before traveling to the Nest on Monday, Delaware State will compete at Coppin State on Saturday. Ponce James and Miles Webb lead the Hornets, with James as the top scorer (14.8) and Webb the top rebounder (6.3). Delaware State is ranked second in the MEAC in scoring defense, holding opponents to 70.5 points per game.
MEAC Standings Carousel: The Eagles are currently at the top of the MEAC standings with four wins and only one loss (.800). Morgan State has more wins (5), but two losses, including one at the hands of NC Central. The top three is rounded out by South Carolina State (4-2) after a win against UMES on Wednesday, the former top team entering the week.
First Half Done, For Some: This weekend begins the second half of the MEAC schedule, as many teams will play opponents again. Due to different winter weather events, there are some teams that still haven't reached the 7-game mark, which is the halfway point. NCCU, South Carolina State and Delaware State all have make-up games that will be played in February, and in a short span, those teams will have to play each other once more before the MEAC Tournament.
MEAC Minute: As a team, NCCU is first in free throw percentage (.727), assists average (15.35), steals average (9.05) and turnover margin (+2.80). Individually, Gage Lattimore remains the league's leading scorer (17.8) and free-throw shooter (.888). Khouri Carvey is first in offensive rebounds (6.6) and field goal percentage (.580). Dionte Johnson is first in three categories (assists: 6.1, assist-to-turnover ratio: 2.4, steals: 2.6).
