WASHINGTON, D.C. – The North Carolina Central men's tennis team was clicking on all cylinders in its 7-0 victory over Coppin State on Friday morning at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's East Capitol Campus. The two teams faced off in the first match of the day at the 2025 MEAC Round-Up.
NCCU (10-4, 2-0 MEAC) added another conference victory to its record, marking the tenth overall win of the season. The last time the Eagles earned a double-digit winning season was in 2014-15 when they finished 11-10.
The Maroon & Gray opened the day with three doubles triumphs. In No.1 Doubles, Hugo Hidalgo Vega and Rodrigo Alves came out ahead in a 6-4 set. Oliver Saarinen and Kareem Abdul Hakim swept their opponents 6-0 in No.2 Doubles.
The final doubles slot was won by Antoni Pankowski and Leo Fortier-Gariepy (No.3), marking the duo's sixth straight win with a 6-3 set.
NC Central kept its foot on the gas in singles as well, highlighted by Abdul Hakim's pair of 6-0 sets in No.2 Singles. Naresh Bharathy (No.4) and Alves (No.3) closed their second sets with 6-0 scores as well.
Hidalgo Vega continued his singles streak with his seventh consecutive victory in a pair of 6-1 sets over Coppin State's Tinashe Whata in the No.1 position.
Pankowski (No.5) and Fortier-Gariepy (No.6) were the final Eagles on the courts. Fortier-Gariepy defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-0, followed by a 6-4, 6-1 triumph from Pankowski.
NCCU continues the MEAC Round-Up on Saturday, March 29 at 3 p.m. facing Morgan State at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Md.
