ORLANDO, Fla. – The NC Central men's tennis team will be returning to the Bull City from the Orlando area after a successful spring break trip winning all five matches. The Eagles closed out a competitive week winning a doubleheader on Thursday defeating Niagara 5-2 and sweeping Findlay 7-0.
NCCU (9-4, 1-0 MEAC) is already at its win total from last year with seven regular season matches remaining.
The first match of the day was against Niagara at Azalea Lane Park in Winter Park, Fla. NC Central opened the match securing the doubles point in the No.1 and 3 slots. Hugo Hidalgo Vega and Rodrigo Alves' match at No.1 did need a tiebreaker but the Eagles pulled through 7-2 to claim the set.
Four more points came in No.1, 2, 3 and 6 Singles. Kareem Abdul Hakim and Hidalgo Vega both won 6-4, 6-1 sets in the No.1 and 2 positions, respectively. Alves denied his opponent victory in No.3 Singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Leo Fortier-Gariepy earned the final point taking No.6 Singles in three sets, winning the first and third.
The Maroon and Gray carried over momentum to the evening match, blanking Findlay at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.
Every Eagle that stepped on the court was victorious. After doubles competition wrapped up, NCCU worked at securing more points in singles.
Naresh Bharathy (No.3), Antoni Pankowski (No.4) and Hidalgo Vega (No.1) each triumphed in pairs of 6-2 sets. Also, Oliver Saarinen defeated Runa Kagoshima 6-4, 6-3 in the No.6 slot.
Alves and Fortier-Gariepy both needed 10-point tiebreakers to settle the match. Alves clinched with a 10-5 tiebreak as well as Fortier-Gariepy at 10-8.
The Eagles return to conference play for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Round-Up on March 28-30 in the D.C.-Maryland area. NCCU opens competition facing Coppin State on Friday, March 28 at 9 a.m.
