Series History: In the two previous meetings with the Virginia Cavaliers, NCCU fell in both. The last time the two programs played was on Dec. 5, 2023, with UVA defeating the Eagles 77-47. Against the Mountaineers, App State leads the series 2-1. In their most recent contest, NC Central dropped a close game 79-74 on Nov. 10, 2022. The lone victory for the Eagles came in 2013 as NCCU took the game in overtime, winning 76-70.
Last Time Out: NC Central fell 114-66 in the season opener at NC State on Monday evening. The Wolfpack got hot from beyond the arc (19-of-40) and outrebounded the Eagles 40-24. Gage Lattimore and Khouri Carvey led the Eagles as Lattimore had a game-high 20 points, and Carvey was two rebounds shy of a double-double.
Scouting UVA: Virginia earned its first win of the season over Rider 87-53, and the first for head coach Ryan Odom, who spent the last two seasons coaching at VCU. The Cavaliers shot 46.9 percent from the field and grabbed 49 rebounds. UVA brings size as they have four players listed at 6-9 and two seven-footers. Five players scored in double figures, including Thijs De Ridder, who led all scorers with 21 points.
Scouting App State: After dropping its opening contest, 82-66 at Central Michigan in the MAC/SBC Challenge, App State picked up a 92-46 victory over Carolina University on Wednesday. Twelve of the 13 players who entered the game scored. Luke Wilson netted 14 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting. The Mountaineers were defensive-minded, coming away with 10 blocks and 12 steals.
EnGAGE: Newcomer Gage Lattimore introduced himself to the Eagles and the Wolfpack in the season opener. Lattimore finished with a game-high 20 points, scoring 13 in the second half. He was only one point shy of matching his career-high from last season at Seton Hill. Lattimore played all 40 minutes at NC State.
Tour de P4: The Eagles are on the road 16 times this season, with nine away contests in non-conference action. Of those nine games, five are against Power Four conference programs. After this weekend, NCCU will have played two ACC teams and will face one more next week at North Carolina (Nov. 15). The final P4 visits will be to SEC country at Kentucky (Dec. 9), and the Big Ten at Penn State (Dec. 29).
Keep Up with Khouri: Khouri Carvey's debut performance as an Eagle was the definition of efficient. Against NC State, Carvey finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, four of which were offensive. Headed into the half on Monday, Carvey didn't miss a shot (5-of-5).
The MEAC Minute: With one game down, there are some Eagles leading statistical categories in the MEAC. Khouri Carvey is tied for first in rebounding average (8.0) and first in field goal percentage (75 percent). Lattimore is currently tied as the second leading scorer and tied for first in free throw percentage after a perfect 8-of-8 performance at the line. Dionte Johnson is tied for second in assists (5.0).
