Series History: For the second time, NC Central welcomes Toccoa Falls to McDougald-McLendon Arena. The last meeting was on Jan. 3, 2023, where NCCU defeated TFC 98-52. Five players from the Maroon and Gray sideline finished in double figures. NCCU shot 36-of-72 (50 percent) from the field. The Toccoa Falls team is also known as the Screaming Eagles, setting up an Eagles vs Eagles battle in the Nest.
Scouting Toccoa Falls: Raheem Kone is the engine that makes Toccoa Falls go. Kone leads the Screaming Eagles in scoring (15.2) and rebounding (9.8). Will Gray-Watson runs point for TFC, passing for 4.0 assists a game. Toccoa Falls' last outing was at Alice Lloyd College with a 78-75 victory. Kone had a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds.
Last Time Out: NC Central fell at No.18 UNC-Chapel Hill in its most recent contest, 97-53 on Nov. 14. The Eagles were led by Ramondo Battle II, who scored 12 of his 14 in the first half. Gage Lattimore was the only other Eagle in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Instant Impact: Ramondo Battle was instant offense last Friday at the Smith Center, facing No.18 North Carolina. In just 11 minutes of action in the first half, Battle heated up with 12 points off the bench. Battle was perfect from the free-throw line and shot 50 percent from the field, netting 14 points.
Bigger Than Basketball: At the UNC game, Coach Moton had a special guest as an honorary assistant coach named Onyx Williams. Williams is a four-year-old boy from Durham battling a rare, aggressive and cancerous brain tumor. His story went viral as his father asked people in the community to help create memories for his son while he continues to fight. NCCU wore special warm-up shirts with Onyx's picture and the phrase "All In With Onyx." UNC's head coach, Hubert Davis, joined Moton and Williams in a pregame presentation where the crowd cheered as they stood center court. Williams jumped with excitement, receiving a Tar Heel jersey and a signed ball.
The MEAC Minute: For the second straight week, sophomore guard Gage Lattimore has been named the MEAC Player of the Week. Lattimore averaged 25.0 points in two games last week for the Eagles. This past Wednesday, Lattimore went 12-of-17 from the field, knocking down nine three-pointers for a career-high 38 points. He's currently first in the MEAC in three-point field goal percentage (53.7 percent) and free-throw percentage (100 percent), and second in scoring (21.6).
