The Eagles are looking for their first conference win after going 0-2 on the road last weekend. At Coppin State University, NCCU lost a back-and-forth affair 63-61 on Jan. 4. Junior guard Po'Boigh King led all scorers with 18 points.
With a weather postponement altering the original date of last Monday's game to Jan. 7, NC Central prepped an extra day for Morgan State University. The Eagles would fall in a double-overtime thriller. Redshirt senior guard Isaac Parson sent the game into the second overtime with a clutch three-pointer before the Maroon & Gray were defeated 102-98.
Junior guard Dionte Johnson and Parson still lead the MEAC in assists per game at a 4.2 average.
As a team, the Eagles sit atop the conference in opposing field goal percentage (30.3 percent), steals per game (10.11), turnover margin (+4.79) and scoring margin (+6.3).
In the national statistical categories, NC Central is 14th in bench points per game (33.05), ninth in fastbreak points (17.05), 24th in offensive rebounds per game (13.89), 14th in steals per game (10.1), 21st in turnover margin (+4.8) and fourth in turnovers forced per game (17.68).
NCCU leads both upcoming series, but Delaware State won last season's final meeting in the MEAC Basketball Tournament semifinals. Before that result, the Eagles had won 10 straight. The Hornets lead the MEAC in combined team rebounds averaging 38.6 per game.
Against UMES, NC Central has won 36 games in 54 meetings, triumphing in the last four. Guard K.C. Shaw leads the conference in scoring at 18.9 points per game. He is 34th in the nation in the same statistic and second in total free throw attempts (135).
Hawks head coach Cleo Hill Jr. has special ties to NCCU as a former player. Hill was a South Atlantic Region All-Tournament team player in his final year at NC Central and reached 1,000 points during his career.
