GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina Central University's men's tennis team wrapped up competition a day early at the UNC Greensboro Invitational due to rain on Sunday, but not before collecting victories in singles and doubles in the first two days at the UNCG Courts.
Other opponents in Greensboro included Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, James Madison, NC Wesleyan and Richmond. Of the seven teams, NC Central faced Davidson, Campbell, Richmond and the hosts, UNCG.
The Eagles were up against the Campbell Camels on Friday, winning two out of three doubles matches. The duo of Hugo Hidalgo Vega and Rodrigo Alves won, 6-3 while the team of Antoni Pankowski and Leo Fortier-Gariepy came out on top with the same score.
Against the Davidson Wildcats, NC Central won three out of four doubles matches. Hidalgo Vega and Alves (7-5), Fortier-Gariepy and Pankowski (6-3) and Oliver Saarinen and Neiman Sneed (6-3) all triumphed.
The Maroon & Gray moved to singles play on Saturday with Pankowski and Naresh Bharathy coming out victorious against the Richmond Spiders. Bharathy defeated Mark Taranov, 7-5, 6-3 and Pankowski defeated Zachary Portnoy, 6-4, 6-2.
NCCU notched six singles victories over UNCG. Hidalgo Vega, Alves, Bharathy, Fortier-Gariepy, Pankowski and Lucas Artigas were all dominant against the Spartans.
Men's tennis continues its fall season in Atlanta, Ga. at the HBCU National Tennis Championships on Sept. 19-22.
