NCCU’s Smith Jr. Claims MEAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – For the second week in a row, the North Carolina Central University men's basketball team has earned a MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honor. This time, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference named junior forward Perry Smith Jr. the winner announced on Monday afternoon.

Smith Jr. averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks in two contests last week. Against Radford University at home on Dec. 5, Smith Jr. scored 20 points, all coming in the second half. He also pulled down eight rebounds.

Six of those rebounds against Radford were offensive boards giving the Eagles the opportunity for second-chance points. Smith Jr. is fourth in the MEAC in offensive rebounds per game at a 2.3 average.

The Augusta, Ga. native went 11-of-19 from the field, including an 8-of-11 performance (72.7 percent) against the Highlanders.

The Eagles are preparing to take on West Virginia University on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
