CARY, N.C. – Senior
Daniel Barbare, junior
Trey Morse and junior
Kendall Wallace all carded three of the lowest 54-hole total scores in program history for the North Carolina Central University men's golf team as the Eagles secured runner-up position at the SAS Championship HBCU Invitational contested at Prestonwood Country Club on Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 15-16.
Barbare broke the NCCU 54-hole scoring record by one shot as he turned in an even-par total of 210 on the 6,284-yard, par-70 Fairways Course layout at Prestonwood. After turning in a three-over par 73 in the first round, Barbare bounced back with rounds of 69 and 68 to level his score in relation to par and to finish fourth overall out of 21 NCAA Division I golfers.
Morse and Wallace also fired career-low, 54-hole individual totals in helping the Eagles finish second in the DI field with a three-round total of 26-over par 866. Both of those 54-hole team marks of 866 and 26-over par are new program records as NCCU comfortably held off both Chicago State University and University of Maryland Eastern Shore by 16 shots (those two teams tied for third place). The 866 team score is a new school record by 25 strokes and the 26-over par score is two better than the previous best single-round program record score in relation to par.
Morse finished in a tie for seventh place with consistent rounds in which he sandwiched a couple even-par 70s around a 74 for a four-over sum of 214. Wallace fought his way into a top-10 finish after opening the event with a 79. Wallace responded by signing for scorecards of 67 and 69 for a five-over total of 215.
Morse and Wallace join Barbare in the record books as all three of their scores will now be among NCCU's top-10 best total scores from a 54-hole event in program history.
The 67 shot by Wallace tied for the second lowest round in program history, one shy of the record 66 shot by Zane Lewis in 2015-16. The 68 by Barbare match his collegiate low round while the 70 shot on back-to-back days by Morse are new personal low rounds as well.
The freshmen due of
Kobe Narcisse (79-78-74—231) and
Kyle Gregory (78-76-79—232) both contributed counting scorecards to NCCU's team score over the weekend in assisting in new team 18-hole and 54-hole scoring records.
The 74 by Narcisse on Sunday was his collegiate low round as the Eagles turned in a record-setting round score of one-over par 281. That total is a new record by five shots after NCCU broke the previous program record of 289 one day early with a 286 in Saturday's second round. The one-over par total on Sunday is a new single-round program record as well.
Florida A&M University won the team with a score of one-under par 836. Chicago State's Kieran Hogarth won medalist honors with a three-under 207 (72, 66, 69).
NC Central will next compete in the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate at LPGA International on Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 25-26.
