NCCU’s Keyser and Perkins Named Preseason All-MEAC, Eagles Picked to Lead Southern Division

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University men's basketball seniors C.J. Keyser (Baltimore, Md.) and Jordan Perkins (Greensboro, N.C.) have been selected for Preseason All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honors, the league office announced on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Keyser was voted to the first team, and Perkins was named to the second team, and finds himself on a Preseason All-MEAC list for the third time in his career.

NCCU finds itself in divisional play for the first time since leaving the CIAA as the MEAC has been split into two divisions to reduce travel for the 2020-21 season.  The Eagles have been placed in the Southern Division along with Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, and South Carolina State; and NCCU was voted to win a division championship for the first time in the Division I era as it received 11 of 22 first-place votes to lead the Southern Division.

Although Keyser missed time due to injury and illness during the 2019-20 season, he caught fire down the stretch on his way to earning Third Team All-MEAC honors.  He scored 11.6 points per game over the season, and 15.8 points per contest in 11 MEAC games.  Against MEAC opponents, Keyser shot 56.8 percent from the floor, and 39.5 percent from the perimeter with 3.3 rebounds per game.  He also earned MEAC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 4 after scoring 23 points in back-to-back games against South Carolina State and Norfolk State while shooting 16-for-22 (72.2 percent) from the field.  Keyser later topped that by scoring a season-high 26 points in the quarterfinal round of the MEAC tournament against Delaware State, and shot 6-for-7 from the arc on March 11.

Perkins enters his senior year looking to put the finishing touches of an impressive resume that includes the second-most career assists in NCCU history with 469, and sits 148 helpers behind Emanuel Chapman's all-time mark of 617.  Last season, he served out 154 assists to average 5.0 per game, and finished second in the league in assists per game, and in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.8.  Perkins dished out 5.6 assists per game against MEAC competition, and averaged 7.4 points per game during those contests.  Perkins had a big game in the conference tournament just like Keyser as he tied his career-high in scoring with 17 points in the quarterfinal against DSU.

NCCU was tabbed to win the Southern Division with a majority of the first-place votes, but landed in the top spot by a narrow margin of one point.  The Eagles received 95 points in the poll, and North Carolina A&T ranked second with 94 points and nine first-place votes.  Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, and South Carolina State round out the list.
