DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior
Andrew King has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for July 2019 in recognition of his outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
King saw action in 17 games for the maroon and gray in his final season at NCCU. The southpaw posted a 2-0 record with a 4.74 earned run average (ERA) with 13 strikeouts over 19 innings pitched.
As a four-year reliever, King made 38 appearances for the Eagles, including 21 consecutive entries from the bullpen without allowing an earned run, stretching from his sophomore year into his senior season. He was named to the MEAC All-Academic Team each of those seasons.
King was named the Chancellor's Award winner as the NCCU senior with the highest grade point average at The Eddies. He finished with a 4.0 GPA while also earning the Eagle Excellence (GPA) Award for NCCU baseball.
The product of Greensboro, North Carolina, added several other academic achievements at the 2019 Honors Convocation when he was bestowed the University Award for Academic Excellence, which is the institution's second-highest academic award, and the Highest Academic Performance by a senior in chemistry.
King earned his degree in chemistry at NCCU with a minor in Spanish in May. He has been accepted into the chemistry Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina. It is a four- to five-year program studying inorganic chemistry that requires working and studying in a laboratory under a faculty member from the start of the second semester until the end of the program. Upon completion of his degree, King plans to become a researching professor at a university so he will be able to teach, research and mold the next generation of chemists.
