Eagles Close Season on High Note

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University saw Norfolk State tie the game in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles went on to score three unanswered runs to close the regular season with a 6-3 win against Norfolk State on Saturday, May 11 at the Durham Athletic Park.

With the win, the Eagles clinched a seventh consecutive winning season at home, stretching back through the 2013 campaign.

Both starting pitchers held their opposite sides in check through the first three innings, but NCCU (21-28) was the first to break through with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md.) drove in the first run of the game on a well-executed squeeze bunt that scored Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) and then Bryceson Hernandez (Cary, N.C.) tacked on another run with his fourth hit of the weekend series to send the Eagles ahead 2-0.

NCCU capitalized on an error in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-0 advantage, but NSU (22-24) immediately knotted the game in the top of the seventh.  Justin Hayes (Chesapeake, Va.) delivered a two-RBI single, and then Alsander Womack (Waxhaw, N.C.) drove him in on a single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Eagles were unfazed by the Spartans' rally, and Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) stepped to the plate to deliver a two-out RBI single to right field to send the home side back into the drivers' seat at 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh.  Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) gave the Eagles even more breathing room in the bottom of the eighth as he split the two middle infielders to drive in two runs and move NCCU ahead 6-3.

Ryan Miller (Blandon, Pa.) was brought in to pitch the last two innings of the game, and he worked through with no problem to secure his first career save.  He also collected two strikeouts to reach a new single-season NCCU freshman record with 73 strikeouts, breaking a tie he shared with Alex Weathersby from his rookie campaign in 2007.

Bailey led the Eagles at the plate with three hits including a double, and both freshman outfielders Nick Fajardo (Durham, N.C.) and Hernandez knocked two hits for the maroon and gray.
