Eagles Walk Off in Series Opener against Bethune-Cookman

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University went right to the wire with Bethune-Cookman and Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) delivered a walk-off bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to give the Eagles a 3-2 win in the series opener over the Wildcats on Thursday, April 18 at the Durham Athletic Park.

BCU (14-26, 7-10 MEAC) scored first on a solo home run from Joseph Fernando (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to send BCU ahead, 1-0 in the top of the third.  NCCU (17-19, 8-7 MEAC) leveled the game on an RBI single from Myles Coston (Pittsburg, Calif.) in the bottom of the inning to move the score to 1-1.

The Wildcats regained the edge in the top of the sixth inning after taking advantage of an error, but the Eagles echoed the visitors with another RBI hit from Coston to send the game into the final three innings tied up at 2-2.

Both starting pitchers had strong outings, although neither were the pitcher of record for their side.  Chris Kernen (Greensboro, N.C.) tossed the first 5.2 innings for the Eagles with just three hits and eight strikeouts, and Isaak Gutierrez (Norwalk, Calif.) went six frames without a walk for BCU.

BCU seemed poised to take the lead late as it loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the eighth, but Maslin was quick to react to a line drive hit to him, and flipped it to Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) covering first for an inning-ending double play.

The Eagles capitalized in the bottom of the ninth inning as Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md.) sparked the rally with a single to right field.  Bryceson Hernandez (Cary, N.C.) was the next man up and squared up a double deep to left-center to move runners to second and third.  BCU opted to intentionally walk the next batter to set up the double play, which sent Maslin to the plate.  Maslin wasted no time as he lifted the winning single deep to right field for his team-leading 30th RBI of the year.

Austin Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) was the last man from the Eagle bullpen as he tossed 1.2 innings to be credited with his third win of the year.

Game two of the weekend series is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park on Friday, April 19.  Admission is free.
