CLINTON, S.C. – North Carolina Central University and Presbyterian traded runs over the middle innings and the Eagles were poised to tie the game on multiple occasions, but the Blue Hose were able to keep the Eagles at bay for a 6-5 final at the PC Baseball Complex on Tuesday, March 5.
PC (5-6) got on the board quickly as Zacchaeus Rasberry (LaGrange, N.C.) lifted a two-run homer to left to give the Blue Hose a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) nearly put NCCU (5-7) on the board in the board in the top of the second, but Hunter Grover (Summerville, S.C.) leapt above the left field wall to rob the potential home run and end the frame.
Both teams went back and forth through the middle innings as Rasberry tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth as PC stretched the lead out to 5-0 in a three-run inning. The Eagles put together a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to trim the deficit on RBI hits from
Garrett Nepert (Preston, Md.) and
Justin Bowers (Yorktown, Va.) to cut the lead down to 5-2.
NCCU again posted two runs in the next inning after
Caleb Coyle (Wake Forest, N.C.) worked a bases loaded walk and then an error allowed the Eagles to draw within one at 5-4. PC was able to regain a two-run lead after an RBI single from Jonathan White (Lawrenceville, Ga.) in the bottom of the frame, and the Eagles responded with a run of their own a bases loaded passed ball to send the game to the eighth, 6-5.
Matt Norton (Acworth, Ga.) was able to pitch through the final 2.1 innings for PC as hold the Eagles off to pick up the win on the way to a 6-5 conclusion.
Nick Fajardo (Durham, N.C.) led the Eagles at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a double, and Nepert picked up three RBI for the maroon and gray.
PC was led by Rasberry who notched three RBI, and White who had two RBI on two hits including a double.
The Eagles will be back on the field on Wednesday, March 6 against NC State at 4:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park. Admission is $5.
