Eagles Score Big Late for Weekend Sweep of Florida A&M

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University went to the bottom of the seventh inning tied with Florida A&M, but the Eagles went on to score five to grab an 8-5 win to sweep the weekend series on Sunday, March 31 at the Durham Athletic Park.

This game followed the trends of each of the first two games of the weekend series as both teams scored quickly in response to one another.  FAMU (11-19, 4-5 MEAC) scored first in the top of the second on a single from Kaycee Reese (Tallahassee, Fla.).  NCCU (12-16, 6-6 MEAC) pulled level in the bottom of the frame on a line drive solo homer from Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.), and then moved ahead on a sacrifice fly from Josh Brammell (Harrison City, Pa.) to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

FAMU turned the tables back in its favor in the third on a two-RBI single from Jared Weber (Wakulla, Fla.) and the Rattlers would hold that 3-2 lead all the way to the bottom of the sixth.  NCCU pounced on an error in that frame to tie the game up at 3, and then broke the game open in the following inning with five runs.

Brammell recorded the go-ahead hit on a deep double to right center, and then he came home on a single from Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.).  Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) kept things going for the Eagles as he lifted a two-RBI double, and Bailey finished the scoring in the frame with an RBI double to send the maroon and gray in front 8-3.

The Rattlers were able to put runs on the board in the following half inning once again, with a two-RBI double from Brett Maxwell (St. Petersburg, Fla.) to set up a save situation in the ninth.  Myles Coston (Pittsburg, Calif.) was called in from the bullpen and he worked through the final three outs to get his first save of the year, giving the Eagles the weekend sweep.

Brammell, Maslin, and Bailey each put up two RBI for the Eagles, and Williams recorded two hits alongside Brammell and Bailey as well.  Weber and Maxwell were both responsible for two RBI for FAMU, and Maxwell, Reese, and Seyjuan Lawrence (Tampa, Fla.) knocked two hits.

The Eagles will finish their home stand on Wednesday, April 3 against Campbell at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park.  Admission is free.
