DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University pitching staff combined to toss 16 strikeouts against High Point, but the Panthers put together a big sixth inning to grab a 10-1 win over the Eagles on Tuesday, March 26 at the Durham Athletic Park.
Each of NCCU's (9-16) six pitchers recorded at least one strikeout on the way to the new NCCU modern-era record, and
Chris Krennrich (Fox Lake, Ill.) led the way as he tossed a career-high seven punch outs over four innings as the Eagles' starter.
Caleb Coyle (Wake Forest, N.C.) pushed the Eagles ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, and later knocked his fourth double of the season to finish the evening with two hits.
HPU (9-13) tied the game in its next turn at bat, as J.J. Woodard (Oviedo, Fla.) knocked an RBI single of his own to tie the game at 1-1. The game stayed level until the sixth inning, when Joe Johnson (Benson, N.C.) moved the guests ahead on a solo home run. HPU went on to push six runs across in that frame, and an additional three in the eighth for a 10-1 win.
Jake Eigner (Germantown, Wis.) matched a career-high with three strikeouts for the Eagles,
Shawn Runey (Daniel Island, S.C.) and
Tom Guglielmello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) each registered two, and
Andrew King (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Caleb McRoy (Raleigh, N.C.) each fanned one batter on the way to the 16 strikeout total.
NCCU returns to MEAC Southern Division play on Friday, March 29 against Florida A&M at 6:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park. Admission is free.
