SAVANNAH, Ga. – North Carolina Central University was able to get ahead late in the contest, but Savannah State was able to pull the lead right back on the way to a 4-3 final score in the series opener at Tiger Field on Friday, March 22.
SSU (3-12-1, 1-3 MEAC) plated two runs in the first frame to take an early lead, but NCCU (9-13, 3-4 MEAC) was able to steadily work its way back with an RBI single from
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) in the third, and an RBI single from
Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.) in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
The Eagles were able to pull in front in the top of the seventh inning with help from an error by the Tigers, but SSU was able to amend the misstep with a two-run homer from Turner Davis (Rincon, Ga.) that proved decisive for the hosts.
Nick Fajardo (Durham, N.C.) knocked a season-high three hits for the Eagles, and Williams,
Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) and
Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) each picked up two hits.
Luis Torres-Lopez (Jacksonville, Fla.) put in a long day on the mound for SSU as he went eight innings on the way to being the pitcher of record.
Game two of the weekend series will be on Saturday, March 23 at 2:00 p.m.
