Eagles Close Home Campaign with Win over South Carolina State

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University led by double-digits for the entirety of the second half against South Carolina State, and rode that to a 72-62 win over the Bulldogs in the final home game of the 2018-19 season at McDougald-McLendon Arena on Monday, Feb. 25.

With the win, NCCU (15-14, 10-5 MEAC) collected its 10th home win of the season, and marked its third-consecutive season with 10 or more wins inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.  This is also the second time during Coach Moton's tenure that the Eagles accomplished the feat, after the first run from 2012 to 2015.

The Eagles set the tone early as the Eagles shot close to 58 percent from the floor and went on a 15-6 run about midway through the first period to jump ahead, 30-14.  The Eagles eventually led by as many as 18 as the maroon and gray took a 41-28 lead to the break over SCSU (7-23, 5-9 MEAC).

The Bulldogs took their turn to catch fire in the second period as they shot 52 percent from the floor, but the Eagles kept pace to shoot 52.2 percent, and eventually shot an impressive 55.1 from the floor for the contest.  SCSU chipped away at the deficit consistently in the second half, but the Eagles wouldn't let them within 10 on the way to the 72-62 decision.

Raasean Davis (Chicago, Ill.) marked his final start at home with a team-high seven rebounds with 12 points, and Larry McKnight Jr. (North Miami, Fla.) collected 13 points including a couple of flashy dunks.  Randy Miller Jr. (Odenton, Md.) put up a game-high 16 points with four triples to lead the Eagles, and pulled down four rebounds as well.

Ian Kinard (Clinton, S.C.) put up a team-high 14 points for the Bulldogs with seven rebounds, and Ozante Fields (Denmark, S.C.) pulled down a game-high eight boards with nine points.  Lavar Harewood (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the second player in double-digits for SCSU with 12 points along with five caroms.

The Eagles nailed 11 triples, and marked their eighth game this year of making 10 or more three-pointers.  NCCU will be off for a lengthy stretch, at it will be a wait of 10 days before the Eagles meet North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, North Carolina on March 7 at the Corbett Center in the season finale.
