Eagles Split Close Doubleheader with Delaware State

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University and Delaware State finally met on the diamond after seeing the series condensed to a single doubleheader due to the weather, and the two teams split the day with the Eagles taking game one, 4-1, and the Hornets taking the second, 4-3, on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Durham Athletic Park.

GAME 1
Starting pitching ruled the day as all four starters over the doubleheader turned in at least five innings, and combined for 30 strikeouts over the day.  Darnell Maisonet (Tall Pines, N.J.) set the tone early for DSU (2-3) as he racked up nine strikeouts over his five innings of work.  However, NCCU (4-2) was able to break through early on a solo home run from Vinny Bailey (Raleigh, N.C.) in the bottom of the second inning.

The Eagles were able to gain some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth inning with RBIs from Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) and Trey Maslin (Franklin, N.C.), and then Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) added some insurance on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to move ahead, 4-0.  DSU pulled one run back in the top of the eighth, but Austin Vernon (Raleigh, N.C.) shut the door with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to secure his second save of the year, and a 4-1 win for the Eagles.

Chris Kernen (Greensboro, N.C.) shoulder six innings of work for the Eagles and scattered three hits with just one walk and four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.

GAME 2
Ryan Miller (Blandon, Pa.) and Garrett Lawson (Dover, Del.) battled each other in a pitchers' duel in game two, as the pair matched each other nearly step for step.  Neither side scored in the first five innings as Miller tallied nine punchouts, and Lawson collected eight of his own.

DSU was finally able to unknot the game with an RBI single in the top of the sixth from John Weglarz (Bear, Del.) and then went on to capitalize on a few miscues from the NCCU defense to push four runs across.  NCCU didn't go down without a fight as the maroon and gray immediately put the first two runners aboard in the bottom of the frame before Josh Brammell (Harrison City, Pa.) cleared the basepaths with a three-run homer out to right field to draw the game to 4-3.  However, the Hornets were able to hold the Eagles off in the bottom of the seventh to earn a split of the doubleheader.

NCCU will play its first road game of the year next, as the Eagles travel to High Point on Tuesday, Feb. 26.  The Eagles will return home to the Durham Athletic Park against Presbyterian on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 4:00 p.m.  Admission is free.
