NCCU Cheerleading Tryouts Set for April 7

Who is eligible for tryouts? All young ladies and men currently enrolled in NCCU and incoming freshmen/transfers are eligible for the tryouts on Sunday, August 7, 2019 at 9 am.
 
What are the requirements needed for tryouts?  All young ladies and men must be in good standing with the university. Individuals must be fit, toned and in shape. Young ladies and men should have a great attitude, the ability to take constructive criticism/feedback. Facial expressions and clear, strong voices are a must!
 
Is there an application that must be completed? Yes. The application can be obtained by contacting LuAnn Edmonds-Harris at lharris@nccu.edu. In addition, there is a $25 application fee that will be paid at the time of tryouts. CASH ONLY.
 
Is there a height/weight limit? No. However, all young ladies and men MUST be in great physical condition with fit, tight and toned bodies. Young ladies MUST be able to wear the current uniforms which consist of midriff tops and look good in them.
 
Will I be allowed to wear weave and acrylic nails during the tryout process? During the tryout process, women will be allowed to wear weave and acrylic nails. After selections are made, you will have a session to discuss hair and nail options. Hair options for both men and women will be discussed once the final squads have been selected.
 
What will the tryout process consist of? Young ladies and men participating in the tryout process will bring in an original cheer and dance routine (32 counts). Current/former NCCU  cheers nor dances will be allowed and points will be deducted from total score if material is not original.
 
How will the scoring be done? Each phase of the tryout process will have scores ranging from 1-5 with 1 being the lowest. The Judges will be instructed prior to the tryout process as to what they should look for. At the end of the tryouts, the Judges will meet to determine the individuals who will be a part of the Cheerleading Program for 2019-2020. The Judges' scores are final! Selections are final!
 
Will lunch be provided? Lunch will not be provided but young ladies/men can use their University meal plan or purchase food from local establishments. Water will be provided throughout the day.
 
Will I need to submit a copy of a physical? YES! Individuals MUST provide a copy of a recent physical and the results from a Sickle Cell Anemia Exam by April 3. They need to be sent to my attention (lharris@nccu.edu) by this date.  All young ladies and men will sign a waiver form releasing NCCU, NCCU Athletics, and the Cheer Coaches from any liability during the process which needs to be sent with the physical and Sickle Cell Anemia results. Also, proof of insurance is to be forwarded as well. Recap: A recent copy of a physical; results from a Sickle Cell Anemia Exam; proof of insurance and proof of insurance must be turned in to me (lharris@nccu.edu) by April 3, 2019. None will be accepted on the day of tryouts!
 
What is the attire for the tryout process? Solid Black Cheer shorts (no capris or spandex shorts); Solid Black Sports Bra; White Cheer Shoes and White Socks for women. Men will wear black shorts (no capris or spandex), black tee shirts (no sleeveless), white shoes and white socks.  Hair and makeup should be impeccable! No jewelry (hoop earrings, studs, eyebrow, nose, belly, or lip rings, watches, bracelets, and/or rings) is allowed during the tryout process. Bows are not required. Makeup is allowed for women only!
 
Will I be able to review my scores after the tryout process? Yes. They will be available beginning on Monday, April 8, 2019 in Room 106 in the McDougald-McLendon Arena. Only your scores will be shared with you.
 
Are the tryouts for a particular Cheerleading Squad? No. Tryouts are for the Cheerleading program.
 
How many Cheerleaders will be chosen? For Varsity, up to 12; for JV, up to six. Other members of the JV squad will be selected in August (2019).  A total of up to 12 men will be selected during tryouts (April & August).
 
Which squad will be chosen for which sport? Varsity members will cheer for all home and some away football games. JV will cheer for all home Women's Basketball games. Men will cheer for all home football games. All selected Cheerleaders will participate in on and off campus activities.
 
What will the role of Men be as a member of the program?  During football season, the Men will be responsible for running the flags before the game and after each touchdown/field goals. In addition, they will cheer during the game. Men WILL NOT replicate the women's cheering style. Discussion will be held after football regarding participation during basketball (women & men).
 
Will I have to purchase uniforms/warmups? All uniforms and warmups will be provided by the Athletic Department. Each member of the program will be responsible for the purchase of cheer shoes and socks.
 
FOR ALL CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS, A MINIMUM CUMULATIVE 2.5 GPA IS REQUIRED FOR TRYOUTS. NO EXCEPTIONS! FOR CURRENT MEMBERS OF VARSITY A 2.5 SEMESTER AND 2.5 CUMULATIVE GPA IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE AT THE VARSITY LEVEL IN THE FALL. FOR CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE JV SQUAD, A 2.3 SEMESTER AND 2.3 CUMULATIVE GPA IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. ROUNDING OFF GPA'S IS NOT PERMITTED AND IF INDIVIDUALS DO NOT HAVE THE REQUIRED GPA AT THE END OF MAY 2019 AND HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR THE PROGRAM, IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL WILL OCCUR.
