ARLINGTON, Va. – North Carolina Central University knocked 13 hits in game one, and held George Washington without a run through 8.2 innings in game two, but the Eagles fell in both ends of the doubleheader, 10-4 and 1-0 on Friday, April 6 at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GAME ONE: NCCU (20-13) and GW (18-12) traded runs in the first three frames, with the Eagles scoring first in the opening inning on an RBI single from
Andrew Valichka (Pedricktown, N.J.) before the Colonials immediately responded on an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
The second inning was a big moment for senior starter
Devin Sweet, as he tossed three strikeouts and passed Glenn Frye, who had 214 strikeouts, to become the modern-era career leader. He finished his start with five punch outs, and now sits atop the leaderboard with 219.
NCCU again took a lead in the third on an RBI groundout from
Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.), and again GW knotted the game in the bottom of the third to make the score 2-2.
The Colonials broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth as they sent all nine men to the plate and scored five on six hits to take a 7-2 lead.
NCCU picked up a run in the top of the eighth on back-to-back doubles from
Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) and
Dominic Cuevas (Gurnee, Ill.) who earned an RBI. GW had another multi-run inning in the bottom of the eighth as Mark Osis (West Chester, Pa.) knocked a two-RBI single, and finished game one with four RBI.
Williams doubled again in the top of the ninth to drive in the final run of the game, and ended the first game with three hits.
Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) reached in his first three at-bats with two singles and a double, and also scored a run.
GAME TWO: GW had an opportunity to score first in the bottom of the second after a triple by Nate Fassnacht (Ephrata, Pa.) with one out. The Eagles brought the infield in, and Valichka was able to cleanly and quickly field a ground ball and send it home to
Timmy Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.) to tag out Fassnacht as he tried to score to keep the Colonials off the board.
Pitching dominated the contest as Elliot Raimo (Albany, N.Y.) struck out the side in consecutive frames in the second and third, and fanned seven consecutive all on swinging third strikes during that run. He went on to retire 15 straight before
Mitchell McCrary (Mills Creek, N.C.) broke up the no-hit bid on a single through the left side in the top of the sixth. Williams followed with a single in back-to-back at bats, but the Eagles were still held off the board.
Chris Kernen (Greensboro, N.C.) worked his way out of a few tough situations, including a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning, and tossed 6.1 scoreless innings before leaving with one out in the seventh. He handed the baton off to
Justice Sampson (Lumberton, N.C.) who got a called third strike to end the frame with two runners aboard to once again keep the Colonials from scoring.
The Eagles were struck by bad luck as the Colonials were able to walk off with a 1-0 win by help of two wild pitches and an error with two outs in the ninth inning.
