NCCU's Sweet and Michalski Win MEAC Baseball Weekly Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – Two North Carolina Central University baseball student-athletes earned weekly honors from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as Zach Michalski (Belews Creek, N.C.) and Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) were named Player of the Week and Co-Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Monday, March 26.

NCCU as a team went 5-1 over the week with non-conference wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and High Point before clinching a weekend Southern Division series with Savannah State.

Michalski earned his first weekly honor of the year after batting .438 (7-for-16) with a team-high seven RBI without a strikeout over five games.  He had one of his best games of the week in a 10-2 win over SSU, as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.  Michalski slugged .750 and notched his league-leading sixth home run of the year, and didn't strikeout over 16 at-bats with four walks.

Sweet earned his second MEAC Pitcher of the Week honor after throwing the first nine-inning complete game for the Eagles since 2012, and fired a career-high 12 strikeouts in a 3-1 win over SSU.  He retired the first 10 batters before giving up a hit, and didn't allow an earned run until the eighth frame.  Sweet now leads the league in strikeouts with 54, and averages 11.39 strikeouts per nine innings.

These are the fifth and sixth MEAC weekly baseball awards for NCCU, as the Eagles now have four different Player of the Week winners, and two Pitcher of the Week awards which have both gone to Sweet.

NCCU's next game will be on the road at Norfolk State on Tuesday, March 27 before returning to Southern Division play at Florida A&M on Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31.
