NCCU Eagles Patient at the Plate in Win over Eastern Shore

DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University broke an 11-year old modern-era record as the Eagles walked 14 times in an 18-5 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday, March 20 at the Durham Athletic Park.

The previous record was 13 which was set twice in the 2007 season on the road at Morehouse on Feb. 18 and at St. Paul's on April 13.

The Shore (2-17) scored the first two runs of the game in the very first inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Va.) and Avery Tunnell (Dover, Del.) but that would be all of the scoring for the Hawks until the final inning.

NCCU (15-7) cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Caleb Coyle (Wake Forest, N.C.), but the Eagles really cracked the game open in the bottom of the fourth.  In that frame NCCU racked up nine runs, on six walks and just two hits and two errors to take a 10-2 lead.

Nine runs in an inning is the most that NCCU has scored this season, after scoring six in the opening frame on the road at Presbyterian on March 7.

The Eagles put another crooked number on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning as the hosts scored five runs on four hits, and then added two more in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring with 18 runs, the second-most scored this season after putting up 21 against Iona on March 2.

The Shore scored three more runs of its own in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run double from Joey Nicastro (New Market, Md.) along with an error on the same play that plated the third run.

The Eagles had a total of 30 batters reach base during the contest with 14 walks, 13 hits, two errors, and one batter hit by pitch.

Of note, freshmen Eric Robinson (Asheville, N.C.) and Jordan Varela-Payne (Rolesville, N.C.) picked up their first career RBIs, as Robinson drove in one in his only at-bat as a pinch hitter, and Varela-Payne notched two as he went 2-for-4 in his first career start.

NCCU continues its midweek schedule on Wednesday, March 21 at home against High Point at the Durham Athletic Park with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m.  Admission is free.
