BOX SCORE
ORLANDO, Fla. — The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team had five players earn wins in both singles and doubles as the Eagles registered a 6-1 win against fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member institution Howard University Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
A trio of sophomores got in the win column for the first time this season as NCCU coasted to the victory over the winless Bison, including
Maksym Konovalov,
Brooks Campbell and
Pablo Juez Torres.
Campbell rolled to a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win on the fifth court while Konovalov (6-1, 6-3) and Juez Torres (6-2, 6-1) followed with straight-set triumphs from the fourth and sixth positions in the Eagles lineup, respectively.
Junior No. 2
Gabriel Cucalon (4-6) got back in the win column for the fourth time in his last six matches with a dominating 6-3, 6-0 win over junior Karim Shokeir.
In the most dramatic match of the contest, NCCU sophomore
Theofanis Kontopoulos prevailed over freshman Roger Lyn in a third-set, superset tiebreaker. Kontopoulos (5-5) leveled his singles record with his team-high fifth win after dispatching Lyn by a 6-7 (8), 6-2, 10-8 margin.
The maroon and gray continued its strong doubles play to start a rewarding day.
Cucalon and junior
Sebastian Bromley started the competition with a convincing 6-1 conquest in the middle doubles match. Campbell and Juez Torres then sealed the Eagles first team point with a 6-4 win in the third position. Kontopoulos and Konovalov completed the doubles sweep at No. 1, narrowly edging Shokeir and sophomore Sagar Raju, 7-6 (3).
Campbell/Torres (3-3) and Bromley/Cucalon (3-5) both won their third consecutive doubles matches. Kontopoulos/Konovalov (4-2) have won four of their last five trips to the hardcourt together.
A 7-5, 6-1 win by sophomore No. 3 Cole Gittens prevented the sweep and gave Howard (0-7) its lone point.
NCCU (1-9) will conclude its spring break trip on Thursday when the Eagles battle Chicago State University at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
