DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Central University baseball team left 10 runners stranded on base in being held scoreless for the first time this season in a 6-0 non-conference loss to visiting Appalachian State University Tuesday afternoon at the Durham Athletic Park.
Senior centerfielder
Evan Holland collected two of the Eagles seven hits, including the only maroon and gray extra-base hit with a double.
Freshman Alex Leshock drew a leadoff walk to start the contest and he scored on a double by junior Drew Beck as the Mountaineers led from the onset. Appalachian State (5-9) snapped a five-game skid with the victory.
NCCU (12-5) had runners in scoring position in seven different innings, but App State racked up a dozen strikeouts to keep the hosts off the board.
Junior Brandon Boone (1-1) tossed the first six innings and scattered five hits, did not issue a walk and fanned seven Eagles to earn the win. Classmate Kaleb Bowman hurled the next two scoreless innings and senior Luke Watts posted a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the combined shutout.
The Mountaineers totaled nine hits and were clinging a 3-nil lead until a bases-clearing, three-run double by junior Joel McDaniel in the ninth doubled up the App advantage. Four different Mountaineers laced doubles, including the two Mountaineers that had multiple hits on the day in Beck and junior CJ Brown.
A trio of 6-4-3 double plays started by senior shortstop
Dominic Cuevas limited App State's scoring and kept NCCU in striking distance until the end. Cuevas and sophomore
Corey Joyce both reached base twice and they each had a stolen base, but they were stranded in scoring position all four of those times.
Senior
Jonathan Figueroa (3-1) was tagged with the loss, despite only allowing the first run in a limited pitch-count start. Senior
Nick Caregnato hurled 5 1/3 innings in relief and had a team-high four strikeouts.
NCCU next visits Davidson College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
