2018 UNCG Spartan Classic Results

GREENSBORO, N.C. — After having its first tournament get cancelled due to Hurricane Florence, the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team finally took the court for its first action of the season at the Spartan Classic hosted by UNCG on Saturday and Sunday.
 
Junior Emily Pena and sophomore Sophia Miller highlighted play for the Lady Eagles with a doubles win over the host Spartans on Sunday.
 
The two-day event featured each program playing the other three teams in both singles and doubles competition with no team score. Campbell University and Gardner-Webb University were the other squads participating at the Spartan Classic.
 
NCCU played doubles against GWU on Saturday and UNCG and Campbell on Sunday. The Lady Eagles played singles against the Camels and Spartans on Saturday and the Runnin' Bulldogs on Sunday.
 
Pena and Miller earned their win over UNCG junior Sophia Adams and sophomore Eugenia Camacho. Pena and Miller, who only played together once last spring, defeated the Spartans 6-4.
 
A couple freshmen were making their maroon and gray debuts for the Lady Eagles in Hannah Gaines and Ivana Dragovic.
 
Gaines had the closest singles match for the Lady Eagles, losing a three-set affair against GWU freshman Mayumi Saguchi by a tally of 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. The rookie from Kernersville, North Carolina, also had narrow 7-5 set losses in matches against Adams (UNCG) and Campbell senior Pauline Roustan.
 
Dragovic played in NCCU's lone tiebreaker, eventually dropping the match 6-0, 7-6 (4) to Campbell junior Lea Cutura.
 
Pena was credited with a walkover win as Gardner-Webb did not have a No. 6 singles player available for that match.
 
Also participating for the Lady Eagles were junior Frida Cnossen and sophomore Maru Berghaus.
 
The Lady Eagles next host the fourth annual NCCU Invitational on Thursday-Friday, Oct. 18-19.
